There are many benefits to using a decolonized research framework in qualitative research, including:\r\n\r\n \tEnsuring that the voices of marginalized communities are heard and represented in research.\u00a0\r\n \tThe production of knowledge that is more relevant and applicable to the needs of these communities.\u00a0\r\n \tHelping organizations and institutions to create policies, interventions, and regulations that are informed by community needs.\r\n\r\nReproductive Justice, Critical Race Theory, and Black Feminist Thought\r\nBlack feminist thought (BFT), reproductive justice, and critical race theory (CRT) are all important frameworks for decolonized research (Figure 1).\u00a0\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nFigure 1. Decolonized Research Frameworks\u00a0\r\n\r\nReproductive justice is a framework that seeks to ensure that all people have the right to control their own bodies and their own reproduction. It is based on the belief that reproductive rights are human rights. CRT is a framework that examines the ways in which race and racism have shaped the American legal system. It challenges the notion of colorblindness, and it emphasizes the importance of understanding the historical and contemporary impact of racism. BFT is a theoretical framework that centers the experiences of black women and girls. It challenges the notion of a single, universal experience of womanhood, and it emphasizes the importance of intersectionality.\u00a0\r\n\r\nDecolonized research frameworks can be used to study the experiences of Black women in a variety of ways. For example, they can be used to study the experiences of Black women in academia, in the workplace, or in their communities. A study by Quamila Allen and Kimberly White-Smith used CRT to study the experiences of Black mothers in the United States. The study found that Black mothers often face racism and discrimination in their interactions with healthcare providers, schools, and other institutions. The study also found that Black mothers often have to work harder to provide for their children and to navigate the challenges of motherhood. This study provides insight into the ways in which race and racism can negatively impact the lived experiences of communities of color.\r\n\r\nA study by Wade et al. sought to understand the best practices in health promotion programming for Black women. Through using the Black Feminist Thought framework, researchers grounded themselves in the understanding that Black women navigate racism and sexism which inherently creates a different lived experience than men. The study found that Black women desired health promotion programs tailored to their needs such as programs that were engaging, informative, holistic, accessible, and in group settings. The researchers also highlight the relevance of using Black Feminist Thought in understanding the health needs of Black women in future research.\u00a0\r\nConclusion\u00a0\r\nDecolonized research frameworks are an important tool for organizations and institutions who want to produce knowledge that is relevant and applicable to the needs of marginalized communities. historical power imbalances, decolonized research methodologies offer an opportunity to amplify marginalized voices, foster reciprocal relationships, and generate more equitable and inclusive knowledge generation. Decolonized research methodologies prioritize the acknowledgment of historical power imbalances resulting from colonization. By recognizing the colonial legacy and its effects on knowledge production, researchers can challenge and deconstruct the biases embedded within existing research paradigms. Here, we explore the value of decolonized research methodologies in conducting qualitative research.\r\nAmplification of Marginalized Voices\r\nA key value of decolonized research methodologies lies in their capacity to amplify marginalized voices. Traditional research approaches often reinforce power structures and privilege dominant perspectives, leading to the silencing and marginalization of certain communities. In contrast, decolonized research actively seeks to counter these imbalances by centering the experiences, knowledge, and expertise of marginalized groups. By employing participatory methods and inclusive practices, decolonized research empowers participants to become co-creators of knowledge, ensuring their narratives are accurately represented. This approach encourages researchers to engage in reciprocal relationships with participants, fostering trust and promoting a more democratic research process.\r\nGeneration of Equitable and Inclusive Knowledge\r\nDecolonized research methodologies contribute to the generation of more equitable and inclusive knowledge. By dismantling hegemonic knowledge structures and incorporating multiple perspectives, decolonized research challenges the dominant narratives that perpetuate social inequalities. Furthermore, decolonized research methodologies encourage researchers to engage in reflexive practices that critically examine their own positionalities, biases, and responsibilities within the research process. Through this critical self-reflection, researchers can strive for greater objectivity and authenticity in their work, ultimately enhancing the validity and relevance of the research findings.\r\nExamples of Decolonized Research Frameworks and Methodologies\r\nIn considering qualitative research, there are several methodologies that, when decolonized, can be utilized to more equitably engage with communities. Two primary methods are participatory action research (PAR) and community-based participatory research (CBPR). Both methods prioritize a co-learning model, facilitate equitable institution-community partnerships, and provide dissemination back to the communities in which data was generated. While CBPR focuses on how community members are incorporated throughout the research process, PAR focuses on actionable change as a result of the research process. Additionally, other qualitative methods, such as focus groups and individual interviews, can be conducted in partnership with elders who are trusted and respected in their communities.\r\nConclusion\u00a0\r\nIn conclusion, decolonized research methodologies and frameworks bring valuable contributions to qualitative research. By recognizing historical power imbalances, amplifying marginalized voices, enhancing ethical engagement, and generating equitable and inclusive knowledge, decolonized research paves the way for more socially just and transformative research practices. In 2021, nearly 110,000 drug overdose deaths occurred, 75% were opioid-related. These numbers have only increased in recent years, leading the Department of Health and Human Services to renew opioid use as a national public health emergency in 2023. In addition to fatalities, opioid use disorder can result in adverse physical, psychological, and social outcomes. Research has indicated that medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), which include methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone, are an effective method to treat OUD. However, uptake remains low, with less than 10% of those with OUD utilizing these medications.\u00a0\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\nWhile OUD consequences have been studied extensively, a gap in research remains on how to promote OUD treatment, especially in people experiencing homelessness (PEH). PEH disproportionately experience opioid overdose fatalities, facing up to a 30 times higher risk compared to housed individuals. Understanding the factors contributing to the lack of MOUD uptake is critical when devising interventions to increase utilization. Semi-structured interviews conducted by Swartz et al. evaluated PEH with a history of opioid overdose on influences to seeking care. Researchers found that nonfatal overdoses deterred individuals from initiating treatment. Reasons included emotional distress, sickness from naloxone, and negative interactions with healthcare providers. On the other hand, the consequences of chronic opioid use, such as the stress of avoiding withdrawal symptoms, prompted a desire to start MOUD. Other studies found common barriers to treatment, including transportation, stigma, and withdrawal. For example, participants noted that experiencing homelessness made it difficult to endure withdrawal symptoms. When attempting to access resources to help them through this process, long waitlists, lack of insurance, and lack of transportation inhibited their progress.\u00a0\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\nGaps and Opportunities\r\nAlthough these studies provide valuable insight into factors influencing MOUD use among PEH, more research is needed to fully understand the issue's scope. Journey mapping is one way to determine common barriers to care and touchpoints with the healthcare system. Following a patient\u2019s experience can identify and address gaps in service.
